Scripting Errors

This research focuses on the evolution of form through error and its connection to randomness and repetitive behavior. A typology of errors is displayed and linked to symmetry, excess or insufficiency of elements, formal mutations that results from deviations in the cellular system of a model or body. Through a connection and comparison to biology and embryo morphology evolution, a taxonomy of digital models is created and while linked to fabrication it is readjusted and mutated? The methodologies include cellular automata systems as a logic of matter distribution and a set of differential grids that are extracted from structural and morphological rules. Starting from smaller elements as columns, the process is further investigated and tested in larger scale buildings that require wider spans and multi-part topological surfaces. As such a space, the cathedral is recoded through a translation of Gaudi’s methodologies for his reinvention of Gothic as scultpting resolution through the topological subdivision of main surfaces. The methodology becomes a machine, a tooling system, that explores the activation of matter distribution, detail density, and structural resolution, based on inputs coming from the immediate environmental and morphological context as well as the adjacent connectivity networks.

The research is conducted as a PhD by Architectural Design undertaken at the Bartlett, UCL, under the supervision of Dr. Marjan Colletti and Prof. Stephen Gage
